Massage Therapy Etiquette

There are a lot of people that do not know massage therapy etiquette. So, here are a few examples:

Client: I want to get a great massage, so I’m going to go to the gym and have a great workout!

Therapist: Yes, have your great workout, just don’t forget to shower!

Client: If I am running late for an appointment, does it run into my massage time?

Therapist: Depending on how the schedule permits for the day, it MAY cut into your massage treatment. Why would you want to be late anyways? It’s a massage!

Client: Is the therapist going to see me naked?

Therapist: Your massage therapist will never see you fully naked. By law, we are required to professionally drape. (ie: The body is covered by a sheet the entire time. When working on the right leg, the entire leg is uncovered and draped, when done, the right leg is re-draped, then we move on to the left leg, and that is un-draped, then re-draped when done massaging that leg).

Client: Do I take off my under garments?

Therapist: Since you are professionally draped the entire time of the session. It is “ok” to take off your under garments. Gluteals are a main component when it comes to back and leg pain as well as your hip flexors.

When it comes down to your massage, undress to your comfort level. All massage therapists are professional and ultimately want to help you through therapeutic bodywork. Don’t be afraid to ask a question.
